How is a SIGG aluminum water bottle made, and what's inside?

SIGG has been designing and manufacturing water bottles since 1908 in our own factory in Switzerland – one of the greenest countries on the planet. In our continuing effort to raise the standard for environmental performance, we recently upgraded all our quality procedures and processes. As a result, SIGG can say with even more confidence all ingredients used in our products are in conformance with both European and U.S. regulatory requirements. They are also certified and free of harmful chemicals. Furthermore, all ingredients inside our bottles are free of any volatile organic compounds (VOCs), phthalates, BADGE, BFDGE, and NOGE. In particular, our ingredients are free1 of BPA. SIGG bottles are independently lab tested to affirm our products meet our promise.

What is inside the SIGG high-performance EcoCare Liner?

What is inside the SIGG high-performance EcoCare Liner?

Our SIGG EcoCare liner is a high-performance liner that ensures a fresh, clean taste and no metallic aftertaste. It is chemically inert and all ingredients in the SIGG EcoCare liner are "non-active ingredients." The SIGG EcoCare liner was designed by SIGG, is made locally by one of the leading coating companies in Europe and is applied in SIGG’s factory in Switzerland.

The "high-performing" SIGG EcoCare liner is an ultra-thin bake-on powder coating which is dispersed evenly onto the bottle interior using an electrostatic process that eliminates waste and ensures even distribution of the liner. The liner is bonded to the bottle shell at approximately 200 degrees Celsius to form a highly durable yet flexible barrier. The SIGG EcoCare liner is a strong, high-performance, wear-resistant liner. However, because it is only just 40 microns thick, the coating does not interfere with the ultimate recycling of your SIGG.

Main Ingredients

The main ingredients in our SIGG EcoCare liner are a special combination of ultra-thin film-forming copolyesters, made for SIGG and found in different combinations in many other famous brands in the food and beverage industry. These ingredients are non-toxic and fully compliant with all EU and FDA regulations including EC 1935/2004 and FDA 21 CFR 175.300.

Additional Ingredients

The following other ingredients are added to ensure our liners are durable and provide leading-edge performance, as well as to make it easier to apply them in the manufacturing process. These ingredients are also commonly found in many food and beverage containers and are fully compliant with EC 1935/2004 and FDA 21 CFR 175.300. They include:

Mineral fillers: They make it possible to ensure an even surface and thorough covering of the liner.  Mineral fillers are widely used in food and beverage products as well as products like toothpastes, medicines and other ingestible products.

Flow additives: These are waxy solids made from a naturally occurring fatty acid. They ensure that the SIGG EcoCare liner forms a smooth, tough coating in your bottle.

Color pigments: Are commonly used for coloring in many different food and beverage containers. They act as a visible control agent that makes it easy to identify that the SIGG EcoCare liner has been applied correctly.

Safety Testing, Certification & Compliance

Safety Testing, Certification & Compliance

  • SIGG maintains extensive test and regulation compliance data on file.
  • SIGG fully complies with standards imposed by all the world’s major regulatory agencies, especially in Switzerland (Bundesgesetz fuer Lebensmittel & Gebrauchsgegenstaende LMG), Europe (European Food Act) and the U.S. (FDA Food and Drug Administration).
  • SIGG and our supply partners use independent testing agencies to validate our quality and regulatory compliance.

What is a Carbon Footprint?

What is a Carbon Footprint?

Everybody knows that the emission of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases is responsible for global warming. A few years ago, the phrase “carbon footprint” was coined to measure the amount of greenhouse gases of individual products (the “product carbon footprint”) or companies (the “corporate carbon footprint”).

Can dents in the bottle damage the inner coating?

Can dents in the bottle damage the inner coating?

No, the inner coating is highly elastic. Dents cannot crack the coating and the SIGG bottle remains perfectly usable.

There is a notch or indentation at the bottom of my new bottle? Is this normal?

There is a notch or indentation at the bottom of my new bottle? Is this normal?

Yes, this is what we call an indent for indexing. Every SIGG bottle has one. It is there to help position the bottle for printing. You can watch a video about our manufacturing process at sigg.com/en/about-sigg/knowledge-base/. This indentation does not impact the stability of your bottle in any way.

Can I use my SIGG bottle for fizzy drinks, too?

Can I use my SIGG bottle for fizzy drinks, too?

Yes, of course. All SIGG bottle tops provide a 100% seal and cannot leak. Hint: fill the bottle no further than 2–3 cm or 1 inch below the lip. And before taking a drink, relieve the pressure inside the bottle by gently rotating the entire top.

I noticed that my bottle’s inner coating has darkened, and there are dark spots on the base. What can I do about this?

I noticed that my bottle’s inner coating has darkened, and there are dark spots on the base. What can I do about this?

These discolorations are caused by sugar deposits. Hint: thoroughly rinse the bottle with hot water. To deal with heavier soiling, try a SIGG cleaning brush or SIGG Bottle Clean cleaning tablets.

How can I clean my SIGG bottle properly?

How can I clean my SIGG bottle properly?

Always clean your SIGG bottle manually. Rinse your bottle and bottle cap with hot water after each use, let it dry and always store bottle and cap separately. If your bottle gets very dirty or stained, our special cleaning tablets SIGG BOTTLE CLEAN and our SIGG cleaning brush can come in handy. In addition, you should also clean the individual parts of your kids’ and active tops regularly by hand. Taking the caps apart for cleaning is pretty easy (see illustration).

Can I put my SIGG bottle in the dishwasher?

Can I put my SIGG bottle in the dishwasher?

Cleaning your SIGG bottle in the dishwasher is not recommended as dishwashing detergents may affect the exterior and interior coatings of your bottle over time. What’s more, dishwashers don’t do a very good job of cleaning the classic SIGG bottles with their fairly small mouths. So you can enjoy your SIGG bottle for a long time to come, we recommend you clean it regularly by hand. Rinse your bottle and bottle cap with hot water after each use, let it dry and always store bottle and cap separately.

I dropped my bottle and the bottle top broke off. How can that happen?

I dropped my bottle and the bottle top broke off. How can that happen?

The bottle top has been tested and meets a very high standard of mechanical durability. Yet the stress of a full bottle landing at an unfortunate angle may be sufficient to break the plastic. Regrettably, there is not much to be done about this. But you can buy a replacement for any SIGG bottle top.

My seal leaks. Why?

My seal leaks. Why?

All SIGG caps are guaranteed leak-proof. But even so, they can become worn through intensive use.
Hint: do not put bottle caps in the dishwasher. To clean them, remove and rinse with hot water, then simply leave to dry naturally. By the way, it often helps to replace the bottle seal, which is available as a spare part from your dealer.

The paint is flaking off the outside of my bottle. Why?

The paint is flaking off the outside of my bottle. Why?

Regular quality control ensures a very tough outer coating. However, severe scratches and dents may cause it to crack. If moisture gets between the coating and the bottle wall, the paint may start to flake. This does not in any way affect the bottle’s functionality.

Can SIGG bottles be used for boiling water?

Can SIGG bottles be used for boiling water?

No. Strong heat can damage the outer coating.

Can I fill SIGG bottles with apple juice?

Can I fill SIGG bottles with apple juice?

Yes. The inner coating has been tested with various drinks, apple juice in particular. The SIGG bottle passes this test with flying colours.
Tip: drink apple juice within 12 hours of filling the bottle. Warmth and oxygen may initiate a fermentation process, which by the way is natural and can take place in any bottle, regardless of material.
