Keith Haring (1958–1990) was a US artist influenced by graffiti. In the early 1980s his imaginative chalk drawings in the subways of New York City caught the attention of the American art scene. The very cheerful early renditions were replaced in his later works by more critical social and political statements. Keith Haring, who was diagnosed with HIV, used his popularity to promote research on AIDS and on the social consequences of the disease.
